* Cette photo nous rappelle que Bud Shank fut un saxophoniste de talent depuis les années 1950 et qu'il est toujours actif ! Sur un fond délavé contrastant avec le bleu éclairci de sa veste en jeans, son image s'impose, suggérant la force tranquille d'un géant. Et c'est avec d'autant plus de plaisir que nous contemplons cette photo qu'elle véhicule aussi, pour les happy fews, un hommage à d'autres musiciens, notamment à Art Pepper qui enregistra aussi deux albums célèbres dont le titre comportait la mention Meets the Rhythm Section (un des titres interprétés, Besame Mucho, a d'ailleurs été un titre joué par Art Pepper).

* Sur la première face, une très belle version de Along Came Betty de Benny Golson précédée d'un tout aussi beau thème d'Archie Shepp, Stream.
Si la couverture de ce disque nous donne le portrait d'un Archie Shepp plutôt candide (peut-être un choix du photographe pour contraster avec celui qui fut un des musiciens les plus engagés dans le free jazz** jusqu'en 1972 ?), la deuxième photo, au verso, nous donne un portrait majestueux (à la Miles Davis) d'Archie Shepp.

** D'ailleurs, la photo illustrant la couverture de "Montreux One" nous montre un Archie Shepp, vêtu de vêtements traditionnels africains, usuellement portés par les musiciens à l'époque du free jazz.
Ce volume one est d'un même niveau en toutes ses plages avec notamment une très belle version de Lush Life.

* Un disque que je recommande particulièrement pour ceux qui, comme moi, sont peu familiarisés jusqu'à présent avec le jazz "avant-gardiste" des années 1960.
A noter que Barbara Donald, l'épouse de Sonny Simmons, est la trompettiste du groupe. Et elle est excellente.
Quant à la photo, elle est superbe et en même temps il s'en détache un sentiment d'inquiétude : Sonny Simmons émerge sur ce qui est peut-être le haut d'une colline, paisiblement concentré sur son saxophone, avec en arrière fond un paysage de building évoquant un New York sombre suggérant un paysage de désolation. Ce paysage me fait penser à celui du film d'anticipation de Luc Besson, En un dernier combat, mais aussi aux visions apocalyptiques du 11 septembre 2001 qui engloutirent les deux twin towers, qui ressemblent à s'y méprendre aux deux tours, situées sur cette photo, en arrière fond et qui encadrent Sonny Simmons en avant-plan.
