Un chef d'œuvre !
La " bande à Kenny " pour un étonnant quintette réuni pour la circonstance : Donald Byrd avec le très grand John LaPorta** (qui a malheureusement si peu enregistré) avec au piano Ronnie Ball, un très grand pianiste. Trois musiciens qui n'ont a priori pas enregistré d'autre disque ensemble.

** Il débuta avec la musique classique (dans le " Youth Symphony " dirigé par Leopold Stokowski), puis étudia le jazz, comme Ronnie Ball, avec Lennie Tristano.
Il est remarquable aussi dans les disques de Charles Mingus.

Comme le dit Ira Gitler : Il aurait pu s'appeler A Day in the Life of John Coltrane. En effet, ce double album regroupe pour la première fois (1975) tous les enregistrements réalisés le 11 juillet 1958 par ce quintet qui comportait la section rythmique de Miles Davis (qui prenait quelques récréations ... en cachette de Miles Davis). Initialement, ces enregistrements avaient été publiés séparément dans trois LP (Bahia, Stardust et Coltrane).
